We are a community Yoga and Wellbeing centre in the heart of Cambridge, offering a beautiful, welcoming, accessible and inclusive space. We offer a variety of classes, led by a team of excellent teachers, to suit a range of levels and needs. Through classes, courses, workshops & events, our aim is to provide a space that enables people to bring about positive transformation, within themselves and within their environment. We believe that yoga and meditation offer tools which can be used by anyone to support them in daily life, empowering people to live their life more fully by enhancing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and wellbeing, increasing self-awareness and encouraging a sense of community.
In Sanskrit, the Indian language of yoga, Yoga means 'union'. Satyam means 'truth'. Yam is the bija mantra (a one-syllable sound) of the heart centre. Yam also translates as "to move, to set out...to find out". Therefore by offering the sanctuary of a focused space within which to come together, Satyam seeks to support the movement towards wholeness, the unfoldment of truth within a person's heart.
For us, positive transformation means change both on a personal and a systemic level. We are passionate about anti-oppression. We are an anti-racist, Feminist, body positive and LGBTQIA+ friendly organisation. We see Feminism as the intersectional fight to end oppression for all beings.
We take inclusion and accessibility seriously. They aren’t just buzzwords or tick-box exercises for us a Satyam and we come at them through a deep understanding from our own lived experience. We are continually reflecting on and learning about how we can make our work genuinely more inclusive and accessible. If you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you. We have a ground-floor studio which is wheelchair-accessible or accessible to those who find it difficult to climb stairs.
Our pricing system reflects our commitment to accessibility. Read more here.
We offer classes, courses, workshops and events. You can attend our classes weekly (we would recommend this to develop a consistent practice and to build the community of the class), or you can drop-in as convenient. A lot of our classes are open level, but some may not be appropriate for you if you are new to yoga. We would recommend taking one of our Beginners Courses, or sticking with the Level 1 classes. Who We Are
Satyam is a family-run yoga centre in Cambridge. It was set up in 2016 by local couple Chiraswa & Paul Darking who had a vision of a community yoga space in their hometown. Our mission was to create a place that was accessible and inclusive, providing a full-bodied experience of what yoga is, away from the consumer based, hyper-individuality of the current wellness industry. Satyam is a not-for-profit organisation. We set out to serve the community in the spirit of yoga. At Satyam you will find yoga in many of it's aspects - all of it's 8 limbs, not just the physical practices, but also the ethical focus, the service to the community, karma yoga, and the opportunity to go deeper into the meditative practices of yoga.
The centre is currently run by just 3 members of staff (including Chiraswa and Paul), with the involvement of a dedicated team of volunteers and a wonderful team of teachers and therapists. Read more about our teachers here. Read about our therapists here.
